SANJO
 | |
Sanjo is as unfamiliar to western audiences as the instruments
on which it is played, but it never fails to charm those who hear
it. Although based on early folk melodies and operating within
a formal rhythmic structure, Sanjo performances are always entirely
improvised.
The Biennial is delighted to welcome Min Young-Chi and Chang Jae
Hyo, two of Korea's rising new exponents of this traditional music.
Dressed in traditional costume, and interpreting the Sanjo rhythms
on the ajaeng, a seven-stringed bowed zither and
the taegum, a transverse bamboo flute, they are
sure to delight everyone with their skillful mastery of these
tantalizing rhythms.
