Värttinä Hot music from cool Finland! | ![]() |
Frenetic funky folk-pop group Värttinä (meaning 'spindle') won CD Review's 'Best World Music Album' in 1996, and it has been described as the country's most important cultural export since Finlandia vodka.
One moment a tangy medieval feel, the next a full throaty jazz bass, then the fruity sounds of the Mediterranean or Finno-Ugric boogie Värttinä can do it all. The group of three singers backed by six instrumentalists makes a beautiful and boisterous noise, with songs full of in-your-face sexual swagger, advising modern-day women to go out and get what they want, and not to take any mess from men.
