The bold programming of Sydney Festival positions it at the forefront of arts practice in Australia and up there with the great festivals of the world. There is no more powerful, engaging or popular community gathering in Sydney than the Festival. For three weeks each January, it fills the city with music, imagination and shared experiences, dominates media coverage and covers the city with banners proclaiming This is Our City in Summer.
More than any other cultural event, Sydney Festival defines the citys personality. For over three decades, since 1977, we have presented Australian artists and companies alongside international luminaries too numerous to list (Bjork, Brian Wilson, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello, Ralph Fiennes, Robert Lepage and Sir Ian McKellen are among our more recent guests). Great companies from around the world (Cheek by Jowl, Gate Theatre and the Berlin Staatsoper to name a few) share the Sydney Festival platform with dynamic Australian companies including Chunky Move, Big hART, Back to Back Theatre and The Black Arm Band, and major Australian artists from Nick Cave to Neil Armfield, Cate Blanchett and Barrie Kosky.
Sydney Festival attracts over 1 million people each year to both ticketed and free events, using around 20 of the city?s theatres, parks and public spaces as well as creating its own unique venues such as the Samsung Mobile Festival Garden and Becks Festival Bar. The program is kaleidoscopic in its diversity, from burlesque circus to New York rap to Russian theatre; from contemporary dance to family programs to traditional Indigenous arts practice. In all, the ticketed program comprises around 200 performances. Sydney Festival is equally proud of its free community events such as Festival First Night and the Domain series, and is committed to enabling people from all age groups and social backgrounds to enjoy Festival events cheaply through audience access programs such as Tix for Next to Nix.
