A chance to catch up with one of the most important and exciting developments in Australian film- the emergence of a series of outstanding indigenous film makers creating films of outstanding power and beauty. The program features four highly acclaimed films from the indigenous branch of the Australian Film Institute. Sally Ridley's FLY PEEWEE FLY (1995) a funny poignant film about three generations trying to be a family. Rima Talon's hilarious ROUND UP (1996) about two country boys who find themselves out of place in the hustle and bustle of the city. Darlene Johnson's TWO BOB MERMAID (1996) is the moving story of an aboriginal teenager's struggle to deal with the conflict between her Koori background and her white friendships as she tries to fulfill her aspirations to become a competitive swimmer, in a country town in the fifties. Paul French's wonderful 1994 film, MORE THAN LEGENDS about the history of Australian Aboriginal culture, seen from the perspective of elders from three different tribes, the Nyungar, the Arrante, and the Tiwi Islanders, their social commentary interspersed with Dreamtime stories brought to life in vivid animation.
