10 days on the island

The new kid on the block in Australia's cultural calendar is Ten Days on the Island. The inaugural edition of this biennial celebration of the Arts will take place between March 30 and April 8, 2001. Known as Australia's Island State, Tasmania is actually an archipelago of more than three hundred islands, a land of ancient and dramatic histories containing vast tracts of pristine wilderness and World Heritage locations. Nothing is too far away and the weather at this time is calm and dry with warm days, cool nights and glorious early autumn colours. Visitors can explore these unique treasures and enjoy a program of local, national and international arts taking place all over Tasmania in venues regular and unexpected.

These will embrace Indigenous arts and crafts, music (including the acclaimed Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in Hobart's brand new Federation Concert Hall), dance, theatre, visual arts, film, community and fringe events and a Writers' Festival. Ten Days on the Island will be an international celebration of the special mystique of island culture; all international artists will be from other islands. Programming currently includes artists from Singapore, Iceland, Madagascar, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Tiwi, Manhattan, Ile de Reunion, the Orkney and Shetland islands and is curated by Robyn Archer; singer, writer and former artistic director of consecutive Adelaide Festivals (1998-2000) and the National Festival of Australian Theatre (1993-94-95).

Packages for the full ten days, including flights, accommodation, tickets and self-drive or other transport as well as shorter packages designed around two weekends will be available.
